Thailand has limited domestic oil production and relies heavily on imports, being the second largest net oil importer in South East Asia. Most of Thailand’s natural gas fields are located offshore in the Gulf of Thailand.
The oil industry in Thailand is dominated by PTT, formerly the Petroleum Authority of Thailand. The Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO), which is part of Thailand’s Ministry of Energy, oversees the oil and natural gas production. PTTEP has a stake in many of Thailand’s natural gas producing fields, including Bongkot, the largest field. The largest foreign operator is Chevron, which currently accounts for 70 percent of Thailand’s natural gas production from 22 offshore fields.
